San Simon AZ Real Estate in Arizona
As early as 11,000 B.C. early hunters lived in the Chiricahua mountains. Evidences of the Cochise culture which populated the area in 2000-500 B.C. can be seen in artifacts found near the mountains as well as grinding holes found near water ways. In the 1300's the earliest of what is now referred to as The Chiricahua Apaches began inhabiting the region. Hispanic Culture in the Area began in the 1500s with Spanish exploratory parties. Early Spanish settlements began to appear in the 1700s with the Spanish and Apaches occasionally at war.
Many travelers went through the area by the 1800s including the Mormon battalion and prospectors headed to the Gold Rush in California in 1849. By the late 1850s the Butterfield Overland Mail had a route through San Simon. Because of the early settlers conflicts with Apaches Fort Bowie was established in 1862. The Southern Pacific Railroad through San Simon starting in 1880 brought many more people, and reasons for more people to live in the area. Many of the people who live in San Simon, or the surrounding towns of Portal, Paradise, and Bowie have long term "roots" in the area.
