Bowie AZ Real Estate in Arizona
Fifteen miles down the road, Bowie is the nearest neighboring town to San Simon. Once a booming town, its population has now decreased as a result of the main highway by passing the town.
The Southern Pacific Railroad came to Bowie in 1880, but at the time it was known as Bean, named after the railroad superintendent. The town was named Bean for only three months. In December 1881, the town postmaster changed the name to Teviston, after Captain James Tevis, who established the town.
Bean, who refused to call the town Teviston, started calling it Bowie Station, after Fort Bowie, the military post 14 miles south of Bowie. For a time, the town was known as both Teviston and Bowie Station. On June 8, 1908, the town name was officially changed to its fourth and current name, Bowie.
