In order to identify the best winter-travel destinations, WalletHub began by comparing 130 of the most populated MSAs in the U.S. based on five equally weighted dimensions: 1) Travel Costs & Hassles, 2) Local Costs, 3) Attractions, 4) Weather Conditions and 5) Activities. Under those dimensions, we compiled 26 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Of the 130 MSAs in our initial sample, WalletHub eliminated those for which data limitations existed.

For the remaining MSAs, each was classified as either “cold” or “warm” according to the following temperature thresholds:

  • Cold: ≤ 46 degrees F (50-year average December temperature)
  • Warm: ≥ 57 degrees F (50-year average December temperature)

They then eliminated those with an average winter temperature between the above thresholds (47 to 56 degrees F), with the exception of the top 10 MSAs, which were assigned to the climate group where their average temperature was nearest if they fell within this “dead zone.” WalletHub chose to include the top 10 MSAs on account of their popularity as travel destinations regardless of the season. In total, 69 MSAs comprise our final sample.

Tucson is a Top Pick For Business Meetings

If you’re heading soon to a conference or group meeting, there’s a strong chance you’ll be spending time in Tucson. Tucson launched a rebranding effort roughly two years ago to woo more business gatherings as well as vacationers.

A new survey from Cvent, an event-management portal, puts Tucson in the top 50 best cities for meeting attendees. Tucson launched a rebranding effort roughly two years ago to attract more business gatherings. Local tourism officials give meeting planners tools to help promote the city so potential attendees can see the appeal of traveling to Tucson rather than places they’ve consistently visited, such as like Las Vegas or Anaheim, said Graeme Hughes, director of sales for Visit Tucson.

“People want to experience things and experience the destination in a very personal and tactile way now, so we seized on that momentum to present Tucson as one of those options.” Globally, $565 billion a year is spent on meeting destinations, with the U.S. market seeing roughly 40 percent of that revenue, according to the Cvent survey. Each year, hotels receive $103 billion of that worldwide revenue.

The city of Tucson also offers a deal to planners. If they confirm a meeting or event, Visit Tucson will apply a credit to the master account of the host hotel that can add up to as much as $5,000 if 200 or more rooms are booked for two nights.
